Friday Five

Ok, I think I'm going to call this Friday Five, rather than Friday Favorites, because I have at least 5 things to say, but they aren't exactly favorites this time....soooooo....yeah.  As if you care. Anyhow-same format as last week, just some are favorites, and some are just random related bits.  (Why do I spend so much time explaining what I'm going to talk about before I talk about it? Because I'm a teacher and I'm good at rambling, that's why.)

TV-I was so excited to watch the new episode of 19 Kids and Counting this week! I don't know why I'm so addicted to this show, but I am.  Anyhow, I have to admit that I started bawling during the scene where all of the kids get to meet the new baby in her incubator.  The room was filled with Duggars, but everything was silent, except for all of the older girls sobbing at the sight of their tiny baby sister.  Very touching.

Music-I discovered that my husband likes Weather Channel music.  That was a frightening discovery, let me tell you!  He is seven years older than me, and usually our age difference isn't a big deal, but sometimes our taste in music can be a bit different.  This was one of those times.  We were listening to music from his iPod that he had docked to the stereo.  A jazzy instrumental came on that sounded like the music to the "Local on the 8's" on TWC-I made a crack about it, and he matter of factly commented that TWC does in fact, play this band's music quite often.  Well, of course I couldn't hold myself back from teasing him for the rest of the night.  For example, I'd turn the television to the weather channel, and say "Look honey! It's your favorite music video station! But what's with the geography lesson?"  I also might have brought up how soon I'll be driving him to Denny's for the Early Bird Special.  When he got tired of my jokes, I told him he could just turn his hearing aid down, and then he wouldn't have to listen. He loves me.

Book-Our Connection Group at church is doing a James MacDonald bible study, Gripped By the Greatness of God.  It's a video study with  a workbook.  I'm really enjoying it so far.  The daily workbook devotions are short, but thought provoking.

Movie-Well, I haven't seen it yet, but a friend and I are going to see New Moon tomorrow, if the weather is cooperative.  (I'll have to ask my husband what the forecasts on the Weather Video Channel are saying).  I'm not into vampires-I only read the books after everyone went on and on about how great they were.  Totally not typically my thing, but I read them and liked them well enough, (although I think Edward was a stalker, and Bella was a selfish and manipulative narcisisst, but that's a rant for another day).  Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to going with Jennifer, as she's one of the few people, besides my mother, who doesn't mind that I can't watch a movie like that without making sarcastic comments.  We're hoping that the theater isn't crowded so we can give it the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment.

Blog-I love this guy's blog, he cracks me up with his stories: http://www.knuckleheadhumor.com/  He's hilarious, and I especially love the stories that he tells about his childhood.  Check it out!

(Aack! Where did my spell check button disappear to?)

Friday Favorites

Music
I stumbled upon this at iTunes-totally not something I would have ordinarily checked out, but I love it! Some of the songs are blues-ey, while others have a bit of a southern gospel, almost bluegrass sound. Her voice is amazing and soulful, and the music is beautiful.http://www.amazon.com/Downtown-Church-Patty-Griffin/dp/B00307Q90A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1264806339&sr=1-1"Waiting for My Child" and "We Shall All Be Reunited" are my favorites. You can listen to the music on the Amazon page.

Food
Actually, this is a favorite from a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't blogging then. Some work friends and I went to Santorini's, http://www.greekkitchen.dine.com/ , and I had the best food I've ever eaten in my life! The Mousaka is amazing, and the Pasticchio and Dolmades are fabulous, as well. I've had Greek food before, and like it, but this was by far the best!

Realization
Not so much a "favorite", but I found out that the girl who has done my hair for over a year is not quite 23 yet. Yikes! That means that I was in high school when she was born-boy she must really think I'm old...

TV Shows
I was really excited that "Trainwrecks and Tiaras" (aka-Toddlers and Tiaras) was back on this week, but I didn't pay very close attention to it when it was on for some reason. I was excited to see a new episode, though. "19 Kids and Counting" is coming back soon! I've missed it. I've become such a TLC addict! I keep waiting to see a new episode of "Ruby", but no such luck.

Bible Verse
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Saturday Randomness and Tiaras

I'm sitting here on a Saturday that finally feels like summer. Now that summer is almost over for all practical purposes-the kids start school in a few days. The two monkeys are playing in their wading pool on the back deck. It's so nice to hear them giggling and squealing instead of fighting and yelling, for a change.
I'm watching Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC. I'm such a TLC junkie-I love 18 Kids and Counting, and yes, even Jon & Kate Plus 8. One set of parents make me feel like a lousy mom, but the other set make me feel better, ha! I wish I could be as sweet and gentle and patient as Michelle Duggar is. The woman has 18 kids and never needs to raise her voice. I have 2, and some days, I feel like I never stop yelling. (sigh)
Anyhow, Toddlers and Tiaras is such a trainwreck-I just can't help but watch. I won't even get into how I feel about the fact that the girls wear more makeup than me, or the hideous hairdos, or the "flippers"they wear to cover the adorable gaps in their teeth. I won't get into how wrong I feel it is to objectify little girls, or the terrible lessons these children are learning and all the psychological damage that is being done. I don't feel like getting all "heavy" with that stuff right now. What strikes me most, is that all the Moms say that their daughters love pageants, love the makeup and hairdos and all that, but most of the little girls seem so unhappy with it all. This show is really all about the moms-you can clearly see that they have self esteem issues, and/or issues with their own looks, and this is apparently how they are trying (in a very misguided way) to address that with their daughters. Why are they all southern? Why do the girls have to parade and dance around in such a fake way with those horrific, tacky clothes? Why do the Moms say they don't care about winning prizes, yet you can see that fiercely competitive gleam in their eyes, and the massive disappointment and disapproval on their faces when their daughters don't win. Why, why, why? Scary.
